Know before you go!

Free personal Item

We know how important your headphones, laptops, and crossword puzzles are for your in-flight experience. All passengers are allowed one free personal item that will fit under the seat in front of you. It can be no larger than 14” tall, 8” wide, and 18” long (including handles, wheels, and straps). Think backpacks, purses, briefcases and computer bags.

Carry-on Bag

There are probably at least a few things you want to have within arm’s reach while you’re in the air—and that’s the beauty of carry-on bags.

Carry-On bags charges vary based on the type of fare you purchase and when you finalize your travel purchase. See the handy chart below for details. Carry-On Bags can be no larger than 24” tall, 10” wide, and 16” long (including handles, wheels, and straps) and no heavier than 35 pounds. Think bags with wheels, duffle bags, etc. Carry-On Bags must be able to fit either underneath the seat or in the overhead bin. EarlyReturns Elite members always receive free carry-ons. Carry-on fees are non-refundable.

Note: If you arrive at the gate with a carry-on bag that exceeds the allowable dimensions you will have an additional charge to gate check the bag.

What about other carry-on belongings?

Coats, diaper bags, canes, crutches, Portable Oxygen Concentrators, diaper bags, respiratory devices or any other assistive devices, reasonable amount of reading material (as in, not a complete Encyclopedia collection), and foot rugs for use during prayer are all free to carry on in addition to your one personal item.

Prohibited items

Don’t try to bring weapons (or anything that could be used as a weapon or to inflict bodily harm), explosives, or incendiaries.  Review a list provided by the TSA of permitted and prohibited items which may be included in carry-on baggage including the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule.

(Pssst…Exclusive Frontier Tip: Want to save some extra cash? Remember that checking a bag is always cheaper than bringing on an additional carry-on bag.)

What about bag inspections?

Safety is always a top priority, and all baggage is subject to inspection by security (TSA) or Frontier personnel.

What should I not leave in there?

Be sure to not lock you bags, as they should be able to be opened easily for a quick inspection. Additionally, we recommend that you do not pack cash, electronics, jewelry, laptop computers, medications, important documents or car keys in your checked baggage—just to be safe. Except where required under the Montreal Convention, Frontier is not liable for the mentioned items if you pack them and they are damaged or your luggage is lost.

What time can bags be checked?

You can check your bags up to two hours prior to your departure, so you have plenty of time to relax at the airport. Just be sure to check the Airport & Terminal info at the airport you’re flying out of, as airports in smaller cities can have different policies.

*Remember: For domestic flights you must be checked in with your baggage checked no later than 45 minutes before you departure and 60 minutes before departure for international flights.

Sporting Equipment & Special/Fragile Items

We understand that our travelers often fly with more than simply socks, underwear and a toothbrush.

For anything that won’t fit in your suitcase or needs special handling, below is a breakdown of how you can travel with different items. The regular rules for carry-on and checked baggage—like dimensions and cost—apply to everything here unless otherwise noted.

Firearms & Ammunition

Frontier Airlines takes the transportation of firearms and ammunition very seriously. We believe there is a perfect balance between observing your right as a citizen and keeping everyone safe at airports and on flights. If you’re familiar with the security requirements and checking firearms and ammunition, then you’ll surely recognize our rules. If you aren’t familiar with how it works, below are ten easy rules you must follow.

(Pssst…Exclusive Frontier Tip: Don’t forget to make sure you’re in compliance with the state laws and regulations of the state or territory that you are traveling with your firearm to—each one is different.)

  • Firearms, ammunition and firearm parts may be transported by passengers 18 years or older in a checked bag on domestic flights in the U.S., but are not allowed to be carried on to flights. To guarantee that your firearm or ammunition get to the same place you’re going, be sure to have them in a checked bag. Otherwise, they will get confiscated at security.
  • Neither firearms nor ammunition are allowed on international flights, even if they are in a checked bag.
  • All firearms must be unloaded at time of travel.
  • When you’re checking in, be sure to declare that you have a firearm in your bag to the customer service representative at the ticket counter.
  • You firearm must be packed in a hard-sided, locked container (or suitcase), or a hard-sided, locked gun case. The container must be able to lock securely and only able to be unlocked by you (occasionally, a TSA screener will need to examine a firearm, in which case the combination or key to the case lock should be provided to the security personnel).
  • One passenger is allowed to check up to 11 pounds of ammunition.
  • All ammunition must be securely packed in either the original manufacturer’s packaging, a fiber (such as cardboard), wood, or metal box, or other specially designed packaging.
  • Ammunition may be packed in magazines or clips if the exposed portion is covered or sealed (i.e. sealed with duct tape), or the magazine/clip is placed in a pouch, holder, holster, or lanyard. All ammunition must be secure.
  • Ammunition may be packed in the same hard-sided, locked, firearm case, provided it is packed as described.
  • Black powder and percussion caps used with black-powder type firearms are not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage.

We take the safety and security of our passengers and employees very seriously. These regulatory requirements are strictly enforced to help us maintain a safe environment. Any violators of these rules can face criminal prosecution and the imposition of civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation.

Damaged/Lost Baggage

Or as we call it, “fixable and findable”

You hope it never happens, but it’s best to be ready if it does. It’s our responsibility to take care of your belongings, and we don’t take it lightly. Frontier Airlines is 100% committed to helping in these situations.

If your bags are damaged or do not arrive where you do, be sure to report it (whether it’s damaged or lost) before you leave the airport—the sooner we can respond to the situation the better. All claims for damaged or loss baggage must be made within four hours of your flights arrival.

What can I do if my bag has been damaged?

If your baggage was damaged, we want to do everything we can to make things better. But for obvious reasons, our liability can only go so far. Here’s what you need to know if your bag isn’t in the same shape when you landed as it was when you took off:

  • A Frontier representative will be at the baggage carousel when you gather your bags. If your bag is damaged, find the Frontier representative to report the damage within the first four hours of arriving at your destination.
  • Present your damaged bag so the agent can determine the liability. It’s important to keep in mind that while we will always do what we can to help, we simply can’t be liable for normal wear and tear. This includes scratches, small dents, rips, tears, and general dirtiness. We also aren't liable for torn, scratched, missing telescopic handles, straps, zippers, wheels or wheel casings.
  • Frontier accepts no responsibility if your bag was clearly overstuffed beyond its capacity.
  • We aren't liable for the baggage carried in the passenger area of the aircraft (carry-on baggage).
  • If the agent determines that Frontier was responsible for the damage, we will proceed with the next steps from there.

Except where required under the Montreal Convention, Frontier is not liable for the below mentioned items if you pack them and your luggage is lost or damaged.

Keys, jewelry, cash equivalents (including checks, gift certificates, and gift cards), silverware, china, glass, ceramics, pottery, bottles, negotiable papers, securities, business documents, files, manuscripts, publications, blueprints, precious metals/stones, antiques, heirlooms, irreplaceable items, collectibles, artifacts, paintings/works of art, art supplies, natural fur products, tobacco products, medication, orthotics, surgical supports, optics/vision devices, orthodontics, natural fur products, trade/commercial samples, photographic/video/electronic equipment and accessories, sound reproduction equipment, CDs, DVDs, musical instruments, computer equipment (including hardware, software, and all accessories), machinery and/or their parts, unsuitably-protected recreational and sporting equipment, bags made from lightweight material not designed for shipping, fragile articles, or other similar valuable items and commercial effects.

Lost Baggage

It’s not something you ever expected. If it happens to you, we want to solve the problem, which means reuniting you with your bag.

First, find the Frontier representative at the baggage claim after your flight. The representative will create a tracing file and provide updates to you regarding the status of your bag. From there, you’re in good hands. Our team will be working to get your bag back to you before you REALLY need to change your socks.

It is important to note that liability for loss or damage to checked baggage is limited to $3,400 per ticketed passenger for domestic travel.

International Liability Limit

For travel governed by the Warsaw Convention, liability is limited to USD 9.07 per pound, or actual value, whichever is less, for checked baggage and USD $400 per passenger for unchecked baggage.

For travel governed by the Montreal Convention, liability is limited to $1,131 Special Drawing Rights per passenger for checked and unchecked baggage

Items Left On The Plane

Being in the air is often quite relaxing. Maybe when your plane landed, you stood up, exited, and, in a relaxed state, left an item on the plane. We’re sorry to hear that, but we’re here to help. Learn how we can assist in trying to locate what you left behind.

We have some extensive language about loss, damage and delay of property included in our Contract of Carriage (PDF) which you can view by clicking the link.
